![]() Some Techniques About Learning New Words Before writing these techniques, you better know that Learning New Words is like Losing Weight- there is no truly easy way to do it. If you want to lose weight, you have to eat less and exercise more. Medicine will not help you to do it. If you want to build up educated vocabulary, you have to work too. Therefore, the more effort you put, the more new words you learn and always remember the saying You Are The Prisoner Of Your Vocabulary :The first method is Tricks and Mnemonics Mnemonics is a device or trick that helps you REMEMBER something specific. It can apply to the spelling, meaning, and pronunciation of new words. It also helps you memorize new sentence. For example, if you want to remember the spelling of a hard word like "arithmetic", you may use the following mnemonic: "A Rate In The House Might Eat Tom's Ice Cream". The first letter in each word in this sentence stands for the letters in the word "arithmetic". Remember the sentence and you remember the spelling of the word This technique can appeal to our ears too. Look at this sentence "In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue" Look also at the spelling mnemonic: "i" before "e" except after "c," and in words that say "a," as in "neighbor" and "weight." This mnemonic say that in writing "i" comes before "e" except if they come after "c" or words that have the sounds "a Remember All mnemonics work in the same way: by forcing you to associate what are you trying to remember with something that you already know, or with something that is easier to MEMORIZE (Robinson, 2001) التعديل الأخير تم بواسطة إبراهيم المزيد ; 01-04-2006 الساعة 08:49 AM |

![]() Dear Ibrahim
Thanks a lot for your explanation. If I may add, I think it's very important that a learner MUST discover his/her own way of learning. Some learners may depend mainly of their visual perception of the information. others, may depend on their audial ones. At the end of the day, what matters is the target ( which is learnign the language), regardless the method. However, learner should be familier woth the variaty of learning methods. ![]() Mohammad, you are absolutely right. No method is the only and best method to learn new words. Everyone has to find his/her own method since no one method can apply to everyone. However, these techniques are said to help those who have no method or have not yet discovered their methods of learning new words :)

![]() The second method is deducing the word's meaning from the context Context will often lead you astray, but doing a bit of detective work is a good way to sharpen your mind and hone your reading comprehension skills. What comes before and after the word always share connections. Just focus on that connection and try to find out the meaning. Look at this following example about the word "charisma": The undeniable charisma of Bill Clinton enabled him to convince Americans to reelect him :)
